LION Adds Cambridge Literature Companions

LION(Literature Online) has added 51 Volumes of the Cambridge Companions to Literature series.
The Companions to Literature is a highly valued series of volumes on a whole range of literary themes, periods, writers and movements. New Occupational Outlook Handbook on display in Government Documents

I want to be an astronaut.

I want to be fashion designer.

I want to be a doctor...a traveling doctor, because I plan on seeing the world.

Oh, and I want to make lots of money.

You remember, don't you, those grade school dreams? Your parents' good friends had been over for dinner or to look at the newly paved driveway or something, and the second thing they asked (right after, "How's school going?") was inevitably, "So, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

And you had a different, more ambitious answer every time.

Now you've made it to Furman University, and whether your aspirations have morphed or changed as you grew, or you're at a loss for what the future holds careerwise, you know you want to do something. And with the media downing the job market in a constantly shifting economic environment, you want the facts so you can make informed decisions right now on what directions to take in the career and work world.

Good thing the Library at Furman houses a copy of Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor. This most current edition of the OOH contains facts about hundreds of jobs and careers, with information about each career for education and training needed, expected earnings, what workers do on the job, and more.

The current OOH is on display for easy access in Government Documents, located on the first floor to the right of the entrance, just past Reference AE-PE. A visual display created by research assistant, Laura Baines, gives quick facts from and about the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Come and see it!

And, even if you still don't know what you want to do after looking through the OOH, don't panic. At least you'll have a few knowledgeable, informed ideas for those unfortunate times when you head home for the holidays and see those family friends that will ask a different question, of increased difficulty and annoyance, "So, what are you planning to do with that major?"

$1 Million Gift

The Milliken Foundation has made a $1 million contribution to Furman in honor of university trustee Daniel S. Sanders, who recently retired from the Milliken & Company Board of Directors.
The gift will go to support Furman’s Charles H. Townes Center for Science. The building’s library will be named for the Sanders family.

The first Secretary of State to visit Burma(Myanmar) in over fifty years, Hillary Clinton is meeting with officials there this week. Films on Demand provides the documentary, Give Me the Short Version on Burma, that provides some interesting background on this Southeast Asian country revealing its struggles and contradictions--rich in natural resources but economically poor, ruled by the military but often controlled by Buddhist priests. And why are western countries like the U.S. , U.K., etc. more comfortable with the title Burma rather than Myanmar?

This film is also featured on the Political Science library subject guide under the "Media" tab.

Ebsco is aware of the issue and is working directly with Apple to solve the problem. New Database for Computer Science Researchers

This database from IEEE provides access to over 380,000 IEEE Computer Society journal articles and conference papers from 27 online IEEE Computer Society peer-reviewed periodicals with all available archives. Search the content of thousands of pages of primary documents in a vast range of subjects. You may access the individual collections by choosing Browse.
Currently there are nineteen different collections. There are first hand accounts of historical events as well as declassified documents that reveal the operations of many international issues of the twentieth century. There will be additional collections added in the future so please let us know how these primary sources are working for you.

At right is an example of a letter sent to President George H.W. Bush in 1989, from the collection , Tiananmen Square and U.S.-China relations, 1989-1993.

Women and Social Movements

On a trial basis, the Library is providing access to the electronic resource, Women and Social Movements in the United States. The trial runs through the month of November.

Women and Social Movements in the United States is a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, this collection seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding about U.S. history. The collection currently includes more than 4,050 documents and 145,000 pages of additional full-text documents, written by some 2,200 primary authors.

LexisNexis Returns

Back by popular demand, the database LexisNexis is once again available to the Furman community. This database provides access to over 10,000 news, business, and legal sources. Included are stories in national and regional newspapers, wire services, broadcast transcripts, international news, and non-English language sources. LexisNexis also provides access to the Shepard's Citations service for all federal and state court cases back to 1789.

A new exhibit is on display in the Library Special Collections. Furman on the Move: The Plyler Years 1939-1964 chronicles the many ways in which Furman University shifted and adapted during the presidency of Dr. John L. Plyler. Through pictures, letters, and other memorabilia the exhibit showcases Dr. Plyler's impact and contributions to the university during this important period.

9/11 E-book Collection

In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of September 11th, ebrary is providing open access to a collection of e-books related to the tragic events of that day. The 15 titles in this collection are displayed on the Library's homepage in the rotating images of e-books. Throughout the month of September, library patrons may access and download these titles. Ebrary hopes that this collection will serve as a valuable resource to those seeking to learn more about September 11th.

Commemorating 9/11

In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of September 11th, Furman University is hosting a number of interfaith events designed to promote religious tolerance. The "From the Ground Up" project will facilitate interfaith conversation through a remembrance service on September 11th along with a month-long lecture series.

Another component of "From the Ground Up" is faithSERVE, a service project sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain and the Heller Service Corps.

Students participating in faithSERVE will volunteer with the Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) to serve meals and spend time with families in transitional homelessness.

The faithSERVE initiative was created in response to President Obama's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge.

A display in the Government Documents Collection highlights the faithSERVE initiative. Several government documents on interfaith dialogue, homelessness, and faith-based partnerships are incorporated into the display.

You can refine your search by using the check boxes on the left side of the page.

"theSEARCH" will lead you to an article's full text if it's available.

Sometimes "theSEARCH" will suggest a subject database which it thinks will return the best results for your keywords. Click on the database name, but remember that books will be excluded from a database search.

Library Ranked Among Most Beautiful

The James B. Duke Library has been named one of the "Most Beautiful College Libraries" in the nation by CampusGrotto.com. Furman is ranked 46th in the list, which includes libraries at Harvard, Yale, Emory, Duke, and Wake Forest. In compiling the list, CampusGrotto.com says it looked "at some of the most magnificent university libraries across the country" and that "one must visit these libraries in person to get the true feeling of inspiration that these buildings provide."

New Gender Studies Databases

The Library has recently subscribed to three new Gender Studies databases. All 3 of these resources have been added to the All Databases list located on the Library's homepage.

Women's Studies International-Covers the core disciplines in Women’s Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research. (Coverage 1972-present)

Gender Studies Database-Combines Women’s Studies International and Men’s Studies databases with the coverage of sexual diversity issues. (Coverage 1972-present)

LGBT Life-Contains all of the content available in LGBT Life as well as full text for more than 120 of the most important and historically significant LGBT journals, magazines and regional newspapers, as well as more than 150 full-text monographs and books. (Indexing back to the 1950s)

Compute and Track Your Citation Metrics

Google Scholar recently introduced a new service called Google Scholar Citations. It is currently in testing mode with a small number of user accounts. Once it's up and running anyone who publishes can create an account to compute and track their citation metrics.

International Studies Compendium

Access the Parker Library

Parker Library on the Web provides access to high-resolution digital copies of manuscripts in the Parker Library of Corpus Christi College (Cambridge University Press, 1912). The collection includes 559 manuscripts, most of which were numbered and catalogued by M.R. James in his 1912 catalogue of the collection, as well as volumes given to the library after the James catalogue was published.

Royal Society of Chemistry

The Library has recently added the Royal Society of Chemistry Journals Archive. This archive provides access to peer-reviewed research journals in the areas of biology, biophysics, chemical science, materials, medicinal drug discovery, and physics. The RSC Journal Archive contains all articles published by the RSC (and its forerunner societies) from 1841 to 2004. The backfile contains approximately 238,000 articles in 1,400,000 pages. Current access is available to select titles, including Analyst, Chemical Communications, Chemical Society Reviews, Dalton Transactions, Faraday Discussions, Journal of Materials Chemistry, New Journal of Chemistry, and Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry.

19th Century Newspapers

The trial of Sustainability Watch runs through June 30th. Sustainability Watch provides evidence-based summaries on over 200 sustainability-related topics. The database monitors journals and periodicals, and presents best practices in a variety of sustainability areas including environmental impacts and pollution prevention initiatives, corporate citizenship, and long-term sustainable business practices.

JB Duke Library Plays Role in 12th Place Ranking

Polling conducted by the college ranking service, The Best Colleges, reveals that students who graduate from universities with beautiful campuses typically report greater satisfaction with their college experience. TBC created a ranking of the 50 Most Amazing College Campuses, with Furman at #12. The JB Duke Library was specifically recognized as being "amongst the standout buildings" on campus.

Library Gives 3 Scholarships

Ethel Carlisle Southern Librarianship Scholarship for 2011 has been awarded to the following students:

Kelly Leonard -- '11
Megan Slemons -- '08
Melissa Troyer -- '11

The scholarship, established in 1985, is available to a Furman rising or graduating senior who anticipates becoming a Librarian or a Furman graduate who has been accepted into an American Library Association accredited graduate program. Traditionally, the scholarship has been awarded to a single recipient. This year, three of the five applicants proved equally deserving of the award. Each student will receive $3,000. (The amount and number of awards varies each year.)

Kelly was accepted to the University of Kentucky and the University of South Carolina. She will attend USC. Kelly says: "After working at the Circulation Desk, I realized how much I truly enjoy working in an institution that works to preserve knowledge."

Megan was accepted to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and USC. She will attend Chapel Hill. She says: "Working in the library was among my most valuable and enjoyable college experiences . . ."

Melissa was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She will attend Chapel Hill. Melissa says: "For me, the search process is one of the most rewarding experiences in the library, and I am excited about guiding other people and sharing the thrill of the hunt with them."

"Academic honesty boils down to three simple but powerful priniciples:

• When you say you did the work yourself, you actually did it.

• When you rely on someone else's work, you cite it. When you use their words, you quote them openly and accurately, and you cite them, too.

• When you present research materials, you present them fairly and truthfully.

That's true whether the research involves data, documents, or the writings of other scholars. These are the bedrock priniciples . . . They're principles for academic honesty across the entire university"(Lipson 3).

The library has citation guides (MLS, Chicago, APA, APSA, etc.), tools (Noodle Bib and RefWorks) and style manuals to help you with clarity, grammar, punctuation, and citing to help you do your best work at this busy time in the semester.

An extension of PASCAL Delivers -- You can now designate a different pickup location for your PASCAL Delivers books. Furman is still your default location for PASCAL deliveries, but if you need to have an item shipped to another academic library in South Carolina, whatever the reason, you now have the ability to designate a different pickup location.

How to Use??

Submit your PASCAL Delivers request as usual. When you get to the point where you enter your name and ID, select from the drop-down list the Pickup Institution you desire and submit your request. If the location you desire is not listed, that institution is not yet participating in PickUp Anywhere. You will receive an email notice when your book arrives at the selected library.

Children's Authors & Illustrators Week, Part II

My favorite place at the Duke Library is the juvenile and curriculum section in the basement area near the computer center. When you enter the juvenile section, the lights may be off...but don't worry, a motion sensor typically turns the lights on as you enter! Very cool! If you want to browse the latest and greatest in children's literature you'll find a new books shelf on the right side of the area where you enter too. You won't want to forget about looking for your old favorites from childhood either because they are very likely in the collection.

I'm often asked for my top ten favorite books or authors list. I can't do it because every time I write it...I see the titles and authors that I forgot. For today though, at this moment in time, my top ten favorites are

Think you know how our presidents spoke and thought about issues during their administrations? Think immigration is a new topic in America? Come and play the "Who Said What" quiz in the government documents area of the library. Match the fourteen most recent presidents with their statement about immigration.

The statements are taken directly from Public Papers of the Presidents, a series the library owns from Herbert Hoover through Barak Obama (still in progress in the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents ). They contain all the public messages, speeches and statements of the president arranged in a chronological, daily order. What a wealth of primary documents! Let us know how you do on the quiz.

Martin Luther King as Reader and Thinker

Dr. Martin Luther King, whose birthday we commemorate this weekend, was a scholar from an early age. Skipping two grades, he entered Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 15! He then went on to divinity school and received his degree in 1951, at age 22 from Crozer Theological Seminiary. By 26 he received his doctorate in systematic theology from Boston University.

During these years of study King was a voracious reader and digester of many schools of thought in religion and philosophy. From his early study and readings he "drew certain conclusions that have remained with me as convictions" (The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. 20). From his autobiography we learn some of the many writers that were to influence his thinking and actions:

What kind of food should you bring? If you depended on groceries from a food bank, what kind of items would help you feed your family? A jar of peanut butter or can of tuna would go father to make a meal than a can of green beans. A jar of spagehetti sauce is better than a can of cranberry sauce. Put yourself in other's place when you select your food for fines.

Happy Birthday Mark Twain

175 years ago today, humorist, journalist, river boat captain and American original, Samuel L. Clemmons (pen name Mark Twain) was born in Missouri, near the Mississippi River. A popular writer who captured colloquial and native speach as well as the American spirit, Twain is surely best known for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1875) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). Read a short biography of Twain in Gale Biography in Context.

A search in Furman's library catalog for Mark Twain as author yields 236 titles! and a search of Twain as a subject yields 183! One of the most interesting is The Writings of Mark Twain, a definitive edition consisting of eight volumes of his works, each volume bearing his signature! (see photo) This work lives in Special Collections on the second floor of the library.

This was the headline of a story in the January 31, 1928 edition of the Hornet, the student newspaper predecessor of the Paladin. The story went on to tell of the many daily visitors to the library (chalked up on a recording tablet in the library) and the number of books that were checked out.

Digicenter Honored by InnoVision

InnoVision, an awards program focused exclusively on celebrating achievements in innovation and technological excellence in the South Carolina Upstate region, has honored Furman Library's Digicenter and its manager, Jen Haldaman.

The Digicenter was selected as a finalist for innovations Jen developed using Apple Script and metadata which automatically generate KML files for GoogleEarth maps and XML files to populate interactive time lines. The maps and timelines display images pulled directly from the university's digital assessment management system (LUNA).

Through the use of mapping and time line integration with the digital collections, the Digicenter has created – and continues to create – customized classroom and research materials using the information from its digital collections. The Digicenter has created much more than a repository of items – it has integrated those materials into the classroom environment in innovative and remarkable ways. Congratulations!

Preparing Your Mind to Write a Research Paper

Standard & Poors Industry Surveys have always been the the best way to get financial and business information on over fifty of the largest North American and global industries. The S&P Register provided important business facts on over 100,000 leading public and private corporations worldwide, including current address, financial and marketing information, and a listing of officers and directors with positions and departments.

Now this information is combined online in S&P's NetAdvantatge, which the library has on a trial basis. It's a one stop source of proprietary analysis on industry trends, corporate activities, and investments. S&P NetAdvantage is used at many investment firms, corporations, government agencies, and law offices.

In addition, non-business students will find a Financial Education section with tools for understanding personal finance including sections on "Using a debit card," "How a budget works," and "Getting a student loan".

The trial will go until March 2011. We welcome your feedback on this resource.

Research Deadlines

As you gather the research for your final papers and presentations, you may find that getting the best resource requires an interlibrary loan--borrowing an item from another library. If you need an article or book that Furman doesn't own or have access to, all you need to do is request it through interlibrary loan. Learn more.

In order to receive books for Fall term, requests should be submitted by November 23rd. Requests for articles should be submitted by December 2nd. Requests submitted after these deadlines cannot be filled through normal channels and will be addressed on a case by case basis. Such Rush Requests carry a cost of $10 per item, please talk to a librarian if you need assistance.

Confused about Citing Sources?

You're not alone! The library will be offering workshops on citing your sources next Wednesday (11/10) and Thursday (11/12), from 3:00 - 4:30 (although they may not last the full 90 minutes, depending on questions) in Room 041 on the ground floor of the library.

We'll talk about some resources that can help you create your bibliographies and avoid plagiarism, and show you how to find the information about a source that you need to put in your bibliography - for example: what's the title of this website? how do I cite an online encyclopedia? what do I do with a congressional hearing? If you'd like to attend, please sign up.

Today is the aniversary of the discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamen, one of the most important archeological discoveries of modern times. On November 4, 1922, more than 3000 years after Tut's reign, an English archaelogist, Howard Carter, discovered one of the only unplundered royal tombs in Luxor, Egypt.

Digitizing Hidden Resources

The Digicenter, located on the ground floor of the James B. Duke Library keeps a steady stream of projects going that stretch across all academic departments.

The digitization of physical objects such as photos, slides, maps, and any number of formats of text greatly broadens the access and increases the value of the original resources in ways that could not be done before.

One of the most popular collections is the Iliad Manuscripts: images of three Homeric manuscripts of the Iliad, housed in the Marciana Library in Venice. Dr. Christopher Blackwell from Classics was involved in the imaging of the manuscripts. The Furman Cougar Project also draws many visitors. Taken in Ladder Ranch in Sierra County, New Mexico,the photos in this collection were graciously contributed by Dr.Travis Perry in Biology.

One of the most transformative projects involves the digitization of a number of library resources that to this point have existed only in microfilm or microcard formats. In addition a number of these items never made the transition to the library's catalog, and have therefore remained "hidden" to users. Now not only have they come to light but by virtue of the Digicenter's work of employing Optical Character Recognition software, many are fully searchable. Included among the titles completed are the only only black newspaper published in Greenville, SC during the 1960's civil rights era, The Carolina News and Guide . Only 16 issues survived but at some point were saved on microfilm, and now they find life in the digital world.

Planning for Those Final Papers

It's not too early to start gathering research for your end of term papers and projects. You may find that getting the best resource requires an interlibrary loan--borrowing an item from another library. If you need an article or book that Furman doesn't own or have access to, all you need to do is request it through interlibrary loan. Learn more.

In order to receive books for Fall term, requests should be submitted by November 23rd. Requests for articles should be submitted by December 2nd. Requests submitted after these deadlines cannot be filled through normal channels and will be addressed on a case by case basis. Such Rush Requests carry a cost of $10 per item. Please talk to a librarian if you need assistance.

Need Images?

Are you working on a project that requires images? Here are some resources you may find helpful:

ARTstor is a database to which the library subscribes with approximately 500,000 images covering art, architecture and archeology.

AP Multimedia Archive is another library database that contains over 700,000 Associated Press photos that go back to 1840 but most of which are contemporary images made since late 1995. It also includes graphics, maps, illustrations and logos prepared by Associated Press graphic artists.

Wikimedia Commons is a free database of almost 8 million freely usable media files. Easy to search and download, almost all images taken from Wikimedia Commons will be under some kind of free license or in the public domain.

Flickr can yield great images by using the advanced search option. It is recommended you check the "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content " box at the bottom of the search form to find images that are freely usable.

Research Assistance will be happy to assist you in your search for images. The Studio Lab can assist you with technical questions regarding downloading and inserting graphics into your presentation.

What You Need for Fall Break

Before you drive or fly somewhere for Fall Break, come by the library and get a recorded book to keep you company on your journey!
The library has over 800 audio books, of which over 300 are novels. You can browse what we own in the catalog, search for a specific title by limiting to "Spoken Record" in the material type drop down, or come and look for yourself on the main floor of the library.
Just don't do what I did when I got so involved in my recorded book that I ran out of gas! Have a great, safe break.

Global Citizens Read!

Remember the bumper sticker "Think Globally, Act Locally"? The library wants to update that to "Think Globally, Read Locally" and we're ready to help!

Come and see our new Year of Global Citizenship display of library books that promote awareness, knowledge and sensitivity to other nations, cultures and religions, and issues that face all "global citizens".

Located on the main floor near the front stairwell, the display is not static, but meant to circulate. It will be changing throughout the year.

We would love you to suggest books or DVDs to add to the display--both titles the library already owns, and titles you want to suggest for us to get. Please send your suggestions to Libby Young or Robyn Andrews.

Banned Books Week [Sept.25-Oct.2] is an annual celebration of our right to read without censorship. It commemorates the most basic freedom in a democratic society—the freedom to read freely—and encourages us not to take this freedom for granted.

Europa World Plus offers the most comprehensive annual coverage of the world's countries, regions, and organizations through narrative and statistical reports. The government, economics, and general living conditions of each area are presented. A couple of the most useful features are the General Survey articles and Recent Events presentations that appear for every world region.
As the example shows, select South America, Central America and the Carribean.
This will open the regional page for a look at seven articles in the General Survey all pertaining to different vital topics.

For example, take a look at the article on Gender and Development in 21st Latin America. Similar rich and up-to-date country and regional information is available throughout Europa World Plus.
